  1. Open the downloaded file and drag Fala into your Applications folder.
  2. Open Fala. It's signed and notarized by Apple, so it opens normally — no security warnings to click through.
  3. Get a free OpenAI API key at platform.openai.com/api-keys (a few dollars of credit covers months of dictation) and paste it into Fala's Settings.
  4. Grant Microphone and Accessibility when Fala asks. Accessibility is what lets it type for you — System Settings → Privacy & Security → Accessibility. Quit and reopen Fala after granting it.
  5. Hold your key, speak, let go. Default is Right ⌥ (Option) — change it anytime in Settings.

This build is unsigned — Windows SmartScreen will warn that it's "not commonly downloaded." Click More info → Run anyway. You may see this twice: once for the installer, once when Fala first opens.
  1. Run the installer and click through the SmartScreen warning above.
  2. Open Fala. It lives in the system tray (bottom-right, near the clock) — not a regular window. Click the tray icon to open Settings.
  3. Get a free OpenAI API key at platform.openai.com/api-keys and paste it into Fala's Settings.
  4. Hold your key, speak, let go. Default is Right Alt — change it anytime in Settings.
  5. If Fala won't open, check %TEMP%\fala-startup.log — it records exactly where startup stopped.
